Cold Aisle Containment Cooling System
The goal of cooling a data center is to get the cold air to the servers, and the warm air back into the CRAC units. There are several methods for controlling the warm and cold air, each with its own benefits, costs and inefficiencies.

C7 Data Centers goes about managing its data center cooling by using a domed cold aisle containment cooling system. Below are highlights and features of this data center cooling method.
- Cold air is forced into the servers working with the server fan to move the cold air through the server.
- A temperature differential of only about 5 degrees Fahrenheit from the floor of the cabinet to the top of the cabinet, preserving equipment life.
- Hot air is efficiently trapped and directed to the CRAC intake for cooling and redistribution.
- Outside the cold aisles the data center temperature is maintained at a comfortable level for those working on equipment for long periods of time.
- Cold air is used for cooling the equipment rather than cooling the whole room.
- Power costs are reduced.
Cold air enters the cold aisle through perforated floor tiles. A pressurized environment is created with blanking panels and an enclosed dome and doors so that the air is forced through the servers. Once the heat is carried away from equipment, it exits the back of the cabinet and quickly rises to the data center ceiling. The CRAC air return is elevated to efficiently pull down the heated air, cycle it through the glycol chillers, and then return it to the cold rows.
Variable speed drives ensure a consistent flow of pressurized cold air through the cold aisle. In addition, the air is conditioned for excess moisture, dirt particulates and is even sampled with VESDA sensors right at the CRAC hot air intake for very early warning fire detection.
